PoSH : Workplace Safety

The PoSH Act has now been existent for a decade. Many changes have been made based on judgements of cases by the Supreme court as well as the Covid 19 lockdown. What is important to organizations is to understand the impact of this Act on their employees and the workplace and take measures to create a safe and happy work environment.

The following are aa few measure organizations can take to ensure all employees feel safe and happy at their workplace.

  1. Make an annual calendar of events that the are planned for all employees . This should also include Awareness sessions on PoSH .
  2. Have posters in common areas across the workplace conveying the message of zero tolerance on sexual harassment.
  3. Organize Focus group discussions amongst women employees to ensure that all their doubts are cleared and they are aware of the company’s PoSH policy.
  4. Do a PoSH Policy and awareness session as part of the induction program for new joinees of the organization.
  5. Have the details of the IC (Internal Committee) members and IC email id displayed in common areas.
  6. Have the companies PoSH policy and IC email id on the companies website and accessible to all stakeholders.
  7. The Leadership team of the organization must also in all possible forums and town halls of the organization emphasize on being an organization having zero tolerance to sexual harassment.
  8. The HR can on regular basis circulate messages to all employees and company stakeholders about PoSH. This can be done even by organizing some skits or showing videos or even having a poster competition on this topic for employees.

Creating a safe and healthy work environment is the responsibility of the management of any organization. If organizations take this responsibility then we can be sure that there would slowly and gradually be a decline in the number of sexual harassment cases at workplace in India.
