Women breaking the Glass Ceiling is quiet a passe as we can see many of them doing it. But what I feel is relevant and important is ability of all these women to sustain their growth and maintain their leadership positions. There are many examples around us of women in various fields who have strived hard and created their own identity.
Let me share with you a few examples of women who have inspired and motivated me to think and dream big.
- Kalpana Chawla was an American astronaut, engineer, and the first woman of Indian origin to go to space. She first flew on Space Shuttle Columbia in 1997 as a mission specialist and primary robotic arm operator. The reason she inspires me is her sheer determination and focus to achieve her dreams. While studying engineering in Punjab , many of her teachers advised her against specializing in aeronautics. But her dedication led her to become a successful astronaut.
- Nirmala Sitharaman , Finance Minister of India. She is India’s first female full time finance minister of India. She also has to her credit of being India’s first female full time Defense Minister. The reason I am so inspired by her is that she does not come from a political family and has risen up only by her own hardwork and dedication.
- Dr. Gagandeep Kang is the first Indian woman to be elected to the Fellow of the Royal Society. She is a key contributor to rotavirus epidemiology in India. Currently is a professor at the Christian Medical College, Vellore.
The above three examples of women with exemplary achievements in their own respective chosen field clearly shows that there is no shortcut to success. All it needs is dedication , focus and the ability to overcome all obstacles to achieve your final goal. I feel blessed to be able to read about such role models . It gives me courage and confidence to believe in myself. It makes me believe strongly in the phrase “If you think you can, you can”.
