India’s contingent for the Olympics has more women than men, there are more women in the board room across the world now and there are more women entrepreneurs than men having are the ability to take risk in business. What does this show? We are at a time where women are considered as equal counterparts at work.
Be it sports where Mirabai Channu and P V Sindhu have won a silver in Olympics or Arundhati Bhattacharya who’s India’s first female boss of SBI, women have always strived hard to prove their capability, especially in India. In our age old family business it was always the son who would inherit the business but now with changing times along with rules and regulations of the government every daughter can also prove her mettle to run the board.
As a county, we are emerging and evolving constantly. We have made the shift to appointing women at board positions but this has not matched the number of senior positions being held by women in corporate India. In fact studies show that that it has dropped from 7.8% in 2014 to 7.2% in 2016. The main reason being cited is that in India women give up their careers and become home makers. The handful who continue to pursue their dream job juggle between work and home are forced to make sacrifices and difficult choices.
But what I am happy about is that times are changing and one of the reasons could be the ability of women to multitask and manage both home and work efficiently. She can manage and grow a company, she can train at the gym and bring laurels for the country, she can be an entrepreneur and provide employment, an author and write award winning books , a director and producer for world class cinema or an educator and nurture the future of our country. We have the capability to excel in every aspect of life if we put our mind to it.
As a society we can see a paradigm shift. We now are witnessing a change in the behaviour of family who are now extremely supportive of their daughters. They are not only encouraging them but also providing them with every kind of support required for them to grow professionally. Many organizations have introduced the concept of flexible working hours, mid week breaks, creche facilities for babies etc to enable women to perform their best when they are at work.
In fact, I must say that I am blessed to have a very supportive family who have always encouraged me to reach for the goals I have set for myself. I can only pray and hope that every women is supported by family and society so that she can also dream big and achieve to her life goals.
