Talent Development

I was reading a book by Marcus Buckingham called “First Break All Rules”. After reading the book I thought I should pen down what I have learnt and share it with all of you.

Marcus, in his book talks about a research conducted across more than 2500 companies , 25+ sectors and more than 1,50,000 employees who are managers at various levels within the organization. Based on this study he has concluded that there are four broad aspects to ensure that companies must have clarity in order to nurture their employees and in turn be profitable

  1. Select the right talent : By this he meant that you must be sure of what kind of talent you are looking for . Only once you are clear about your expectations you would be able to choose the right talent for the right job.

2. Set expectations : Once you choose the right talent, it is important to tell them what you expect from them. You need to set clear guidelines , roles & responsibilities , expectations from them

3. Motivate talent: Encouraging your talent over periodic intervals is necessary for them to deliver their best. We need not wait for the yearly appraisal cycle. We can do an informal discussion every three months with all members of the team to ensure all of them are positively motivated to achieve great results.

4. Develop talent: We also need to ensure that employees upskill themselves and grow within the organization. They need to keep learning and be aware of the new changes in their industry.

I feel that as organizations if we are able to apply these principles on the ground, we will be able to grow.
