In the last few years, there has a sudden rise in technology. This has impacted our society in many ways both positive and negative. It has exposed children to a wide array of information and we are able to connect to people anywhere in the world. It has increased the accessibility to not only information, people, resources and also made children more exposed and vulnerable. Children at a young age now need to be smart and aware of the information that they share and access.
Crime is now not only physical but virtual as well. With children spending more than 80% of their day using electronic media either for school or for attending other classes, they have become easy targets for cyber bullies. These cyber pranksters initially become friends through social networking sites. While interacting with the kid they identify whether the kid is going through any emotional trauma and then take advantage of this situation.
Banning the use of the internet or policing your child in my opinion is not the correct way forward. As parents it is our responsibility to build an healthy relationship with our children. We need to give them quality time. Be part of their games, read them stories, share our experiences and become their best buddy. Ensure that they share everything with you. Have an open channel of communication. This bond will make the child feel secure. The child will then start sharing with you.
When we as parents create a positive healthy environment at home, children feel safe and secure. And not prone to share their feelings with strangers. Children are our future and it is the responsibility of parents, family, teachers and school to ensure that they have a happy childhood.
