Children – The Future Of Our Country

Children are the future of our country and as adults it is our responsibility to protect them, nurture them, guide them, play with them and encourage them to dream big. We have a responsibility to provide them with the required resources , materials , information etc. which would help them prepare for their future. I am just sad to say that as a country we are not shouldering this responsibility well. We are creating a society where children do not feel secured and safe. Children as small as 2 years are getting abused. By abuse, I mean all kinds of abuse – physical, mental and emotional. Imagine the lifelong scar and impact this one heinous act would have on the child.

The recent judgements made by Justice Pushpa Ganediwala w.r.t to PoCSO cases just shows how insensitive we are being as a society. It just shows how instead of moving forward as a country we are creating a society which has no empathy and does not feel the pain that our children are facing. As citizens of India it is our moral obligation to encourage and motivate them ensuring that they have a happy childhood.

This also make me think that what we are hearing in the media are only about the cases that get reported. Every minute there is a child abused. Children are not aware that what they are experiencing is abuse and hence become more vulnerable and scared. Perpetrators take advantage of this situation and continue abusing the child. So as parents, teachers, educators it is our duty and responsibility to not only raise our voice when we see a child being abused but also inform children on how they can complaint and protect themselves.

The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights has created a PoCSO E-box where children can complain about their abuse. It is extremely child friendly and ensures complete confidentiality of information. Also if every school can conduct workshops for children of every grade teaching them what is good touch and bad touch and things they need to be aware about, will surely help make a difference. Lastly the onus lies on us as parents to educate our child. It is better that we educate them and answer their questions rather they get exposed to wrong information from others. Like the proverb goes “Prevention is better than cure”.
