Kintsugi – Golden Repair
Kintsugi is a Japanese Art form of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with lacquer mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum. Here they treat the breakage and repair as part of the history of an object. The idea is not to disguise the breakage but to restore it. The art believes that every pot has a purpose and history and if broken it should be mended to retain its original unique form. There are 3 predominant styles of Kintsugi: crack, piece method, and joint-call. All the three methods involve repairing broken pottery and the technique used as well as the final look of the product differs based on each technique.
This brought me to understand how we can use this art as a metaphor in all our lives be it professional or personal. All of us our are faced with challenges and failures. All of us go through a tough time. All of us find a few situations where our emotions are disturbed and look out for help. Kintsugi is the art of embracing imperfections. It says that unless you go through difficult situations you cannot utilise your strengths to the fullest. You would not value your own inner capabilities. It is important to experience life and take every day as it comes. It is all about learning from the past and moving on for a good present and bright future. The golden cracks are meant to help you heal and become better. You must not only be physically strong but mentally strong as well to deal with emotions.
Kintsugi also focuses on the understanding the importance of “togetherness”. So if the pieces of the pot are together it can look beautiful again. Similarly in our lives we need to understand and value the importance of family and friends. We need to be there and stand by them in good and bad times. We not only need to be their support system but also lean on them when we require them. We need to spend good quality time with our family and close friends and celebrate every movement with a smile. We need to become pillars of strength and support for each other.
