Resilience: The New Way of Life

During these Covid-19 times, all of us have unknowingly acquired a new skill called ‘Resilience’. Whether you are a child attending online school or an adult fulfilling duties related to office or home work or a senior citizen who engages in meaningful remote discussions with their grandchildren, everyone has become resilient in their own ways.  We now plan our activities in advance and prepare for them too. We are also ready to face many technological hindrances and yet find light at the end of the dark tunnel.

Resilience refers to have the ability to face adversity and come out with a positive experience . None of us in our wildest dreams would have ever thought that for six months we would be stuck at home, doing all our household chores ourselves, managing work and professional commitments, not eating outside food, not going to a mall or a movie theatre and not socialising with friends and family. These were unexpected times but we have all sailed through these rough seas and all of us should pat our backs for being able to survive this new normal.

So, now that we all have become more resilient, we need to understand how to sustain this skill for a longer duration so that it becomes a way of life.

Maintaining a sense of calm: We need to be in control of our emotions and  be able to manage them as well. We need to learn to be calm and look at the broader big picture. We need to have gratitude for what we have and also be humble about our achievements.

Finding a solution or workaround:  We need to find solutions to problems and not look at things from a negative mindset. We need to find resources or be resourceful to people. We need to learn to anticipate in advance and adapt in case things don’t fall in place the way we have hoped for them to be.

Maintaining good health: All of us need to focus on our both physical as well as mental wellbeing. We need to exercise daily as well as ensure we keep our mind occupied fruitfully. As the saying goes: “An idle mind is a devil’s workshop”. We need to  be occupied constructively so that we don’t have time to worry over things that we do not completely control. We also need to focus on having a heathy diet and getting an adequate amount of sleep.

Being persistent:  Being persistent and focussed is something that will hold us in good stead. We need to have a positive mindset and an optimistic outlook notwithstanding the lemons that life throws at us. Having that skill will ensure that you do not get weighed down when facing failure and are able to bounce back with more energy to win.

Building a support system: It is critical to have a strong support network around you. This may either be your family or a strong group of friends. Having someone by your side to provide counsel or help is key to sailing over troubled waters.

Having a growth mindset: It is important to overcome or manage perceptions or beliefs that you may have. What may have been the normal way of doing things earlier may not be the same now. So, we need to be open to change and accept it gracefully.

I rest my case here with regards to the need for all of us to be resilient. The sooner we accept and implement this, the stronger we would be as an individual. I wish we all continue to better adapt to changing circumstances in life and grow both personally and professionally.
