Happiness is a state of mind

We all want to feel happy every morning when we get up. But how many of us truly experience this state of happiness? A few of us have had a long night working, some may have had disturbed sleep, some may be thinking of their children’s future and some may be thinking about their ailing parents. Thus, what I am saying is that no amount of money can buy you happiness; it’s only your inner feelings, your inner strength and your inner will-power that would get you happiness. If you are in a happy state personally then that will definitely reflect in your body language, your responses, your work and your family.

So, what can we do to be happy? Some people may want to exercise everyday but lack motivation, some may want to quit smoking, some may want to get away of their alcohol addiction and some may just want to get away from their physical illness. All of these are examples of what we think will give us happiness. But what is important is to take that one giant leap and start your journey towards happiness. So, let me share with you a few things you can think off while embarking on this mindful journey of happiness.

  1. Purpose:  You must be focused and goal oriented. Write down how this goal would help you and place that in your cupboard. The more often you see it the more you get the positive energy rush to achieve your goal. In fact, even defining what happiness means to you in words will help kickstart a positive movement in you.
  2. Motivation: You must be self-determined to achieve your goal.  So, if that means you need to get up early to exercise, keep an alarm, go to sleep early, keep all the things you need handy so that you are motivated to get up and hit the gym. If it means giving up on addiction then, take support from your family and physician, read about the side effects, be mentally and emotionally ready to make this change for yourself. Try to take small but critical steps. For example, try waking up 30 minutes earlier than you normally do. Once you do that, take the next step and step out. Build new habits.
  3. Get Family support: You must get the buy-in for your family to support you in accomplishing your goal. This will ensure that they understand your priorities and will help you streamline your daily activities.
  4. Take a break: Sometimes we get so involved in reaching our goal that we do not realize that in the bargain we are compromising on our health (mental and physical). Hence, it’s important to take it easy sometimes and relax. That will help you rejuvenate and come back to action the next day.
  5. Never give up: Since we are trying to achieve something that we are not used to, there are high chances of failure. It is important that we do not give up and consistently try. Continuity and persistence are the two pillars of success.
  6. Eat Healthy: Eating a nutritious rich food i.e. fruits and vegetables helps the body get the required number of vitamins, minerals, proteins etc., which are essential nutrients required for our body. This would increase your agility and make you fit.
  7. Reward yourself: It is important to reward yourself and celebrate the small milestones which you have completed in order to reach the larger goal. This makes you motivated to push yourself to the next milestone.
  8. Set timelines: Your goal must have timelines. A good way to do this is by making a milestone chart with mini goals. This is something that is essential in both your professional and personal life.

If you follow the above steps, I guarantee that you would be on your way to achieving your dreams and desires. You would be in a better state of mental peace leading to a happier you.
