Managing Emotions In The New Normal

Happiness

Life in the new normal has been different and unique. We wear masks while walking around the garden and sanitize the milk packets before boiling it. There are also a host of other challenges that come our way that we need to deal with. It may be inability to meet family and friends for prolonged duration; working from home; multitasking or even finding new avenues for business. The sooner we come to accept this, the easier it will be for us to take the relevant measures to succeed.

What is important during these times is finding ways to calm our mind. It is being able to make lemonade when you are thrown with lemons. Looking at the positive aspect and finding happiness in what you do makes you feel contented and helps you perform better at work. One way to deal with any stress is to reframe our situation and be grateful for what we have. Being cognizant of the opportunities and the good things you have must instil a sense of gratitude. We need to be responsible for our state of happiness. Once we start blaming people, situations and the environment around us, we are not being truthful to ourselves.

Emotions are a state of your mind. Some may feel happy by having their cup of coffee in the morning; while others may be happy seeing happiness on their child’s face. It’s all a state of mind of how we feel at that moment of time. I am feeling low; I am not in a mood; I am irritated etc, are all a state of how you look and perceive things. Your current state of emotions reflect your way of looking at the world; your actions, behaviour and the responses you give. If you start looking from the other side of the window, you may observe a different view. Thus, it’s all about the view one is focussing on. It can be a beautiful beach with shells, fishes, crystal clear water and dry sand to make castles. It can also a be a beach filled with dirt, muddy sea shore and plastic bags everywhere. We need to make that choice on what lens we want to wear to see the world.

The next mantra is communication. But, I am not talking only about our communication to the external world around us. I am also referring to the internal communication we have within. If we are mentally strong, half the battle is won. But to have mental wellness, physical wellness is the key. So what if you cannot go for your morning walk? Do 10,000 steps daily at home; follow YouTube videos or engage yourself with a fitness expert who would motivate you continuously. What is important is taking that one small step that would lead to the giant leap of success.

Finally, I would end by saying that if I feel happy then I am able to transfer and share my happiness with others and in turn make them happy and bring a smile on their face. Discuss happy events, common interests, exchange cooking tips, share music, do a Zoom call with your besties, dress up for a date night in your balcony or binge watch a serial on Netflix anything that relaxes you. Just getting up reading a beautiful message sent by a friend or recollecting a happy moment of your life will help you kickstart your day with positivity. If you get up with a smile on your face and a will to win then you are positively pushing that sub conscious mind and saying “All Will Be Well”. This would not only help in making you feel empowered but also boost your mental space of happiness.
